In the shadow of the St Mary’s behemoth is the Royal Chapel, a small 17th-century Baroque Catholic church with a richly ornamented exterior. It is believed to be the work of Tylman of Gameren, a Dutch architect. The dome-topped church was built for the city’s then Catholic minority to comply with the will of the Primate of Poland. At the time, Gdańsk was a mainly Protestant city.

Just west of St Mary’s (Targ Węglowy 6) is the landmark Great Armoury. Built in 1609 at the edge of the city’s medieval walls, it is a huge Renaissance building with a spectacular façade, of marked Flemish influence. A great deal of work went into designing a building that would do little more than store armaments, and as such, it is also home to a shopping mall. The other side, which faces Targ Węglowy, is less ornate.

Wedged into a side street at the northern edge of the Main Town is St Nicholas’ Church (Kościół św. Mikołaja; ul. Świętojańska 72). Unlike much of the city, the Dominican church escaped major war damage. The light interior has a stunning collection of 10 black-and-gold Baroque altarpieces affixed to columns on either side of a central nave.
