North of the City

To the north of Dublin, the DART will take you to the Howth Peninsula ª [map] (www.visithowth.ie), which affords splendid views along a cliff-top coastal walk above the pretty fishing village. In early summer nesting sea birds abound, as well as interesting land birds and butterflies attracted by the moorland terrain of the cliff top. In July and August there is a wonderful colour combination of purple heather and yellow gorse. When walking up to the lighthouse, it is difficult to believe that Dublin is just a few miles away–until you see Dublin Bay spread out before you. Also located in Howth is the National Transport Museum (www.nationaltransportmuseum.org; Jun–Aug Mon–Sat 10am–5pm, Sept–May Sat–Sun 2–5pm) at Howth Castle.
