Legend has it that this 9th-century Viking warrior never actually died, but just went to sleep, and will wake to defend Denmark if the country is threatened. During World War II, a section of the Resistance adopted the name of Holger Danske.
Helsingør has more to offer than the castle alone: there are medieval streets of colour-washed houses, the 15th-century Skt Mariæ Kirke and a Carmelite Kloster (Convent) to see, and the shiny new M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark (www.mfs.dk; July–Aug 11am–6pm, Sept–June Tue–Sun 11am–5pm) with interactive exhibitions honouring Denmark’s seafaring prowesses past and present. A clever architectural trick, the uneven floors and irregular angles are evocative of sailing on a vessel.
A short ferry trip across the strait to colourful Helsingborg, in Sweden, is always of interest. The Helsingør tourist office (Havnepladsen 3; www.visitnorthsealand.com), near the railway station, can supply tickets, maps and information. If you visit Helsingør on Saturday, you will come face-to-face with a social phenomenon: Swedes by the thousands making the crossing to enjoy cut-price alcohol shopping in Denmark (their own laws being strict and the prices much steeper). As a consequence, stores selling spirits, wine and beer are prevalent, and it is a strange sight to see Swedes pushing around their little two-wheeled trolleys full of booze.
Visits to Helsingør and to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art may be readily combined. From Helsingør, board the train for Copenhagen, alighting at Humlebæk. Alternatively, at the bus terminal next to the railway station in Helsingør board a number 388 bus for the pleasant 20-minute journey along the coast to the museum. To return to Copenhagen from Louisiana turn left onto the main road to walk back to Humlebæk railway station.
