Bath, with its elegant Georgian terraces and sweeping crescents, has been the ideal backdrop for many Jane Austen adaptations and scores of other period dramas. Due to its popularity with film-makers, Bath has a council-run Film Office to promote film-making in the area and to assist producers.

HOLLYWOOD TO BOLLYWOOD

You will need a car for the countryside section of the trip, but you can start by visiting prominent locations in the centre of Bath 1 [map] or you can tick these off while doing other tours in this guide. You can start, for example, at the Pump Room, whose graceful 18th-century setting has featured in the 1994 and 2006 adaptations of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, and The Music Lovers (1969), a film about the Russian composer Tchaikovsky, directed by Ken Russell with screenplay by Melvyn Bragg, which the Pump Room was passed off as the Moscow conservatoire. The elegant room was also seen in the 2008 BBC television programme Bonekickers, a bonkers and short-lived drama about a team of Bath-based mystery-solving archaeologists.
