I’m ready. When is it best to apply during the application season?

Applying to medical schools is like trying to get on all the rides at Disneyland. If you want to beat the lines for the rides, you have to come early at the front gate. If you’re late at the front gate, you’ll not only take longer to get into the amusement park, but the wait for each ride will be longer as well. By submitting your AMCAS application late, you’ve let all the other applicants flood across the turnstiles ahead of you. By the time your application has shown up at the schools, many of available interview times may have already been taken, and some of the admission slots even already filled!

The reason submitting early is important is because most medical schools have a rolling admissions policy. These schools evaluate, interview, and accept applicants on a continuous (rolling) basis throughout the year until the school runs out of available seats. Thus, the later you apply, the fewer open spots there may remain to be filled. One problem is that many applicants have caught on to how important it is to apply early—so now there is even more intense pressure to apply as early as possible, because more and more applicants are doing so.
