Nobel Laureate Friedrich Hayek, who was well known for his warnings of the dangers of bureaucracy, was also known for saying that organization is one of the most powerful tools human reason can employ.1 We must strike the right balance. And, as a nonprofit grows, organization becomes more important. We must thoughtfully discern our way through these questions.

As social entrepreneurs, our job is to keep an open mind and ask, Under what conditions would adding intentional organization be a good or bad idea? This chapter explores four key design considerations that can help social entrepreneurs:

How might we empower colleagues and teams to be entrepreneurial? Can we build ownership and incentives into the design of roles, agreements, project plans, and performance check‐ins?

Who should be empowered to make decisions? Under what circumstances is top‐down decision making or bottom‐up empowerment preferred?

As we strive to make the most of our scarce resources, can our budgeting and decision‐making processes empower innovative thinking?

When is the best organizational design … no design at all? Can we leave room for experiment and play, spontaneity and discovery, rather than creating barriers?
