Daphne

A few weeks had passed since Karlyn’s rescue and subsequent surgeries. Clinging to life, Karlyn was still in a medically induced coma. I was with Ink when Jonas showed up with the orthopedic specialist, who confirmed that Karlyn would need a complete knee replacement. Until she got stronger, the doctor refused to do the surgery. As for Karlyn’s hand, the doctor wasn’t sure she would ever have mobility. He was suggesting twenty percent at best.

Bones had told Ink a week ago that the swelling in her brain had subsided enough that he could reattach her skull cap. That surgery took half the day, but like the trouper Karlyn was, she pulled through it.

Through it all, Ink never gave up hope. He stayed with his sister until Bones made him leave for the night, where he would come home to me and the kids. He would eat, shower, then climb into bed and sleep. I understood his worry. If something like that ever happened to my brother, I wouldn’t be able to function either. So, I did everything I could to make Ink’s life easier so he could be with her. I watched and cared for Wrenly as if she were my own. I gave her all my love and attention, including her in all my daily activities.

I knew Ink was blaming himself for what happened. Nothing I said or did would change that. In Ink’s mind, he caused Karlyn’s pain. The only one who could give him absolution was Karlyn, and until she woke, Ink would carry that pain.

I was in the clubhouse when I walked past the infirmary and saw Ink sitting beside her bed, holding her hand. Stopping, I looked at Karlyn and frowned.

“Daphne? Are you okay?” Ari said, seeing me. Looking over at her, I asked. “When are they going to bathe Karlyn?”

“What?” Ari asked, walking over to me, looking into the room, seeing what I was seeing. Her hair was greasy and still matted with blood. Even from the hallway, I could see blood under her nails. Even the bottoms of her feet were dirty. “I don’t know. I think they are more concerned about keeping her alive.”

“She can’t heal if she isn’t washed. Look at her. She’s covered in bacteria. That can’t be good for her.”

“You’re right about that,” Jessica clearly said, walking over, along with the rest of the ol’ladies.

“I want to wash her. I know I feel better after I’ve bathed.”

“We can help with that,” Stella smiled as the other women nodded in agreement. There was just something about a fresh bath after a bad day, being sick, even when I was feeling blah, that made me feel better.

“Jess, is it safe?” I asked.

“Gonna have to be a sponge bath, but yeah, it’s safe.”

“I’ll go get everything,” Julie grinned, walking off.

Walking into the room, Ink looked up at me. “Hi baby.”

Leaning over, I kissed him, then smiled when I heard Jessica order. “Ink, go get something to eat. The ladies and I are going to bathe Karlyn.
