No matter how much I texted with Ness or we dirty Skyped, he wouldn’t tell me what this big plan was for Saturday. I was a bit—okay, fine, really—nervous to see him, as the last time we’d been around each other it hadn’t gone well.

It had been a cosmic joke really, and I didn’t want that again, sort of wondering if we’d do better long distance than actually together. That was a weird thing to think, right?

So when I showed up Saturday morning at the time he’d told me, the first thing I realized was he’d told everyone else to be there earlier because there was lots set up and people hustling… And I’d come early. Brat.

What floored me was when I realized Dristann, my friend and the guy I’d taken over my job from, was involved because when he laid his eyes on me, he hurried to the gym’s PA system.

“Gentlemen and dirty tossers, thank you for coming to this morning’s event,” he greeted, bowing when some people clapped.

“Ness forced us,” someone drawled.

It was then I finally found him, swallowing loudly as I saw his intense gaze already focused on me as I took a seat in the bleachers with some of my crest that was attending. I glanced around, realizing lots of the crests were attending.

“Well, Ness did it for a good cause.” Dristann quickly shut down. “For those of you who don’t know because you’re not an athlete, or you idiot athletes who don’t pay attention, let me explain what the lovely Student Council’s appointed athletic department coordinator does. It was my role before VP and the delightful Tad, adorable and helpful freshman he is, offered to take it from me, not having a clue what it was.

“And for that, I’m sorry I never told you, as no one would take the job if they knew what it entailed.” He winked at me, probably guessing I still would have to help. “Now, his job is to make all the sports at our college happen. He works with coaches on what they need, team captains, and team managers all while working with a budget. A tiny, tiny budget that hasn’t increased in ten years. It’s a hard job.

“It’s a thankless job that everyone is dismissive of, even though Tad works tirelessly and truly cares about you lot. When our fierce Ness, captain of the soccer, wrestling, and lacrosse teams, learned how hard Tad worked and this was all left to one student, he decided to arrange a competition to help the budget. To help the athletes, as the towel situation has even reached my ears.

“Apparently, those who graduate take one or three for souvenirs, or simply by accident because they’re hurrying to leave these hallowed halls and don’t return everything. I looked it up, and we haven’t been able to replace any of the towels in five years. So, Ness figured out a way, giving the crests a chance to get some humanity points, and also betting on their athletes to do their crests proud.
