CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Micah

* * *

Still topless, Zeke lounged on the grass with his arms behind his head while I sat at the edge of the water beside Hyde as he drank from the lake. Hyde had returned after Zeke and I had fixed ourselves, and Zeke had sent the water walls back to the lake.

I ran my hand over his back, stopping when he turned from drinking and licked the side of my face in a slobbery kiss. Laughter burst free as I tried to shove him away.

My heart and soul felt light. Content, I couldn’t wipe the sappy smile from my face. The sun was warm on my back, but the breeze helped me from overheating.

Hyde suddenly glanced to the woods just as Cade stepped out. My heart skipped a beat at seeing him, but my stomach sank at the glower on his face when he saw I was there.

Guilt raced to the surface, despite knowing it wasn’t my fault Fate had picked me for him.

Hyde pressed his nose into my neck and snorted against my skin. Smiling, I cupped his face and brought it back enough to have his gaze. The piercing in his eyebrow looked a little strange on a wolf, but it made him seem more menacing.

Voices rose. I spun to Cade, yelling something at Zeke, who stood in front of Cade with his arms crossed.

Did Cade not want me around their spot?

Probably.

My throat thickened, but I managed to swallow the lump. Hyde whined and pressed his forehead to mine. I threaded my fingers into his fur at each side of his jaw.

I jolted when Hyde suddenly shifted out of my grip and moved in front of me with a snarl. I stood quickly when I saw Cade spin and pull off his tee, ready to shift just as a group of shifters stalked into the clearing.

My eyes traced over the few panthers, the bears, wolves, and foxes. All of them had their eyes trained on Cade.

My body locked, and confusion slammed my mind when Hyde’s growl was cut off, and he sat watching the other shifters slowly approach Cade, who still hadn’t shifted.

The front panther snarled before letting out a roar, which the other shifters joined in with.

My pulse pounded when the front panther stopped, crouched, and then bolted straight for Cade. All of the other shifters quickly followed at the leader’s back.

“No!” I yelled. Cade needed to shift, but he wouldn’t have time before they were upon him. He would get hurt. They’d maul him to death.

I couldn’t let that happen.

“Micah, it’s all right,” Zeke called.

But I shook my head. It wasn’t okay. Couldn’t he see that all of them were gunning for Cade?

My power was there, ready to be used, and still, I drew more. My feet left the ground as I floated into the air and picked up each and every shifter running toward Cade. Floating further forward, I spun the growling shifters around me in a circle until I had the main one in front of me.
