Rafe backed up. âYou what?â
âDid I stutter? I. Want. You. To. Leave. Both of you.â
His jaw dropped. âYou canât expect us to go out there. Not with those thingsâitâs a death sentence!â
âYou live a few minutesâ walk away. Youâll be fine. Look.â She pointed out the window. âI can see your yard from here.â
âYouâre using binoculars! And you might see the property line, but thatâs forest, maâam, and Iâll still have to make it through there.â
Edith glared at him, trying not to smirk at the look on his face. Asking him to leave was the last thing heâd thought sheâd do, but here she was. Surprise, surprise, asshole!
âI donât understand,â Rafe continued when she remained silent. âWhy would you do this? Why send us away? If you donât want to talk about it anymore, Iâll shut upâ ââ
âI donât feel comfortable having a stranger in my home after dark.â
There his mouth was again, gaping like a fish. She almost couldnât help the laugh bubbling up. It was such a relief to have something to amuse her after all the worry and anger today.
âIâm notâIâyou know who I amâ¦â
âBut do you know me? Whatâs my name?â She gave him a sweet smile, relishing the color staining his cheeks. Embarrassing this man made her feel powerful in a way almost nothing else did. âItâs okay,â Edith continued, knowing he obviously didnât know her name, or heâd have said it by now. âYou can try to remember while youâre on your way home.â
âHow can you sleep, treating a neighbor this way? Treating anyone this way?â
How dare he insinuate that Iâm the bad neighbor here. âIâll have a good nightâs sleep tonight, Iâm sure. Iâll even bet there wonât be any construction going on until the wee hours of the morning like there normally is. In fact, I bet I can even sleep with my window open if I wanted to.â
âNo, you canât. There are spiders that will eat you alive!â
She frowned. âOkay, so no window.â Heading toward the front door, she added, âEnjoy your walk home!â
âLook, Iâm sorry. Iâm sorry the noise has kept you up. I had no idea you could hear it all the way over here, but I promise to be more considerate from now on.â
Edith said nothing.
âOkay. If you want me out, Iâll go. Will you let my dog stay here? Just until sunrise?â
âAbsolutely not.â
She could hear him grinding his teeth from clear across the room. Finally, he asked, âDo you have a flashlight I can borrow?â
âThat, I do.â
