TWENTY-TWO

Agony

Agony didn’t mean to overhear…this time. That’s the thing with him and Harbinger. He’s not sure if it’s the connection or intuition or doors that are too thin, but he knows something’s up when Flint returns to the guest room.

Yesterday wore on him. After the last month — phoenix-fire burns, the near-loss of his partner, Agony’s irritating presence — a séance was the thing to catch up to Flint. He drops the casefiles on the dresser, sinking down on the end of the bed.

Agony should leave well enough alone. But when has he ever?

“Did you fight?”

“Eavesdropping?” But there’s no fire in Flint’s tone. He doesn’t have the energy to bite back at Agony as they always do, not when everything’s coming undone around him.

Agony leans back in the desk chair, propping his legs on the top. “Over-protective?”

Flint pinches the bridge of his nose. “How do you know that?”

His irritation is different. Not directed at Agony for once, but at Flint himself. It must be frustrating, how someone new sees what Flint can’t after he’s spent so much time thinking he knew Harbinger. Thinking Harbinger knew him.

Or maybe that’s Agony’s wishful thinking. He shrugs. “She’s telling you exactly what she wants.”

Flint undoes the top button of his shirt. “Then why am I struggling to do it?”

“Because you don’t trust her.”

“I trust Harbinger with —”

“Your life, right?”

Flint’s eyes narrow.

Agony nods. “Exactly: that’s not the most important thing you could trust her with.”

A scoff escapes Flint. “What could be more important?”

“You trust her with your life. Do you trust her with hers?”

The muscle in Flint’s jaw tenses. His gaze dips to the ground.

“I know you’re not big on putting faith in other people.” Agony presses a sarcastic hand to his chest. “Present company excluded. But it’s more than people you don’t know. You don’t trust Harbinger to understand her abilities. To tell you when something’s too much. To ask for what she needs. What she wants. And I don’t think you trust yourself to give it to her, either.”

“And why is that?” Derision laces Flint’s words, but at least he’s asking.

“Because everything in you screams to protect her. It’s your nature. It’s your job.”

Flint’s eyes roll. Agony drops his feet to the ground. “All those years sharing the same cramped car, and you still don’t understand each other.”

“We understand each other,” Flint grumbles.

“You know how to work together. How to keep each other alive. But how close have you actually let each other get?”

The séance proved that with the massive weight Flint was carrying without realizing. Every move he makes happens in the shadow of his sister’s murder, echoing through Flint’s every action. How much of his hypervigilance has to do with Harbinger, and how much has to do with Flint himself? The man has never learned to put something down just because it’s heavy.

And Harbinger’s not innocent. Even if Agony doesn’t know what her dreams mean yet, that house and the stone slab aren’t nothing.

“You could predict almost anything Harbinger does —
