Chapter Sixteen

Louis

I TOSSED THE SHIRT on my bed and went back to the closet. I didn’t want to look like a stiff, but I didn’t want to look like I was trying to look too casual. Or too dressed up. I needed to find the balance. I pulled out another shirt and decided to go with it. It was a basic black t-shirt from a designer that charged way too much. The shirt was a soft cotton with a very small brand marking on the hem of the shirt.

I was sticking with shorts. It was too hot for anything else. Besides, everyone wore shorts. I would be the only dumbass in jeans. After settling on what I would wear, I returned the other shirts to their rightful places in the closet. I moved back into the bathroom and looked at my reflection in the mirror. Shaving never crossed my mind. I liked the scruff. I supposed it was a juvenile way to rebel against the establishment that was my family. They were all clean-shaven. It was a requirement to work at the law firm. Every day my brothers and dad got dressed in five-thousand-dollar suits that choked the life out of them. They were all about making money and being part of the world of wealth and power.

I wasn’t. They couldn’t understand it. Golfing was the equivalent of freedom for me. Golfing allowed me to breathe. I got to be in the sun, which I never realized how important it was until I tried to do the whole lawyer thing. It felt like being suffocated. I wasn’t born to spend my days inside an office. Life was too short to spend it doing something you hated.

I combed my hair and put on a little cologne. It wasn’t a date. I was going because she had no idea what she was getting herself into. I knew my brothers and I knew how they partied. Her idea of a party seemed to be hanging out with elderly ladies drinking margaritas out of a can and in bed by ten. I needed to make sure my brothers didn’t get her into trouble.

Or make a move on her. It was just like them to take what I had. They had been doing it since I was born. If I had a toy they wanted, they took it. Never mind the fact they had a hundred of their own, they wanted it. When I started golfing in middle school on a team, they both decided to join golf teams. They hated seeing me be successful or happy. The one thing that made them really happy was stealing my girlfriends. Although, I supposed it couldn’t be called stealing if the women went willingly. My brothers had no honor. It was a game to them.

I wasn’t about to let her become one of their victims. She agreed to go because she thought she would be hanging out with my brothers. She thought she would get a couple of drinks and have a good time.
