“WHAT’S SO GREAT

ABOUT GROUP THERAPY?”

That was the question I asked myself as I sat in my first meeting. If someone had asked my opinion, I would’ve told them that going to group therapy after a traumatic experience may not be as helpful as they thought. I can’t see how sitting in a circle of a group of miserable people is supposed to help me get better.

I entered the room, it was cold and quiet. Everyone was mingling amongst each other fixing their coffee and eating their donuts. There were chairs in the center of the room that formed a circle.

Great.

So, this is one of those things. I’m officially a cliché’. I’d seen this before on TV, but I never thought this would be my life. I didn’t know where I was going until I heard a friendly voice approaching. “Hi, I’m Brad Shepard, but you can call me Shep. You must be Skye.”

“Yep.” I said as I continued to scan the room. I’m sure Shep could tell I was terrified.

“Don’t worry, you’re here with a great group of people. I promised Carla you were in good hands. Please, feel free to have a seat anywhere.”

“How long does this usually last?” I asked as I walked slowly towards the circle.

“Usually an hour, but you’re here at your own will. If it becomes too much, we can just try again next week. We’re all about healing at your own pace.” Everything in me wanted to turn around and leave. I’d promised Noel and Friday I’d meet them at Indigo Beach anyway. If only Carla weren’t friends with this guy…

I found an empty seat next in between a middle-aged woman and a young woman who looked to be in her twenties. The middle-aged woman to my left introduced herself as Mrs. Virginia. She lost her son Vernon last March. He was fifteen. He was walking to the corner store for her when some two drug dealers got into an argument and began shooting at each other. He was caught in the crossfire. It was so heartbreaking to hear her story through painful sobs.

To my right was Brandy Johnson who was eighteen. She was sexually abused by her uncle. She suffered for five years before she got the courage to tell her mother. Then directly across from me sat Mr. Ricky Cruz. His twenty-two-year-old daughter Sophia has been missing since New Year’s Eve. She went out with some of her friends, and she never came home.

Their stories on top of my own was too much to bear. I sat quietly and wiped my tears as I listen to each person share. When my turn comes, I pause.

“Is it possible to skip this time?” I ask while nervously peeling the skin off my fingers.

“Are you sure Skye? I’m sure you’ll feel better after sharing.” Mr. Shepard the group leader asked as he brought me a cup of water.

“I’m just not ready.” I said as I took a sip of the water that seemed to be just what my parched throat needed at the time.
