Chapter 7

N eon pink grid lines over a void-like blackness formed an eerie virtual landscape that sprawled out around me on all sides. The sky was like a glitched out aurora of purples and blues, and there were no stars visible. A tingling sensation ran down my spine, a surge not unlike being electrically shocked. My muscles contracted, and my skin flushed with goosebumps as my vision adjusted to the digital realm around me.

“I’m in,” I said.

Jeckles’ voice sounded in my ear as he spoke to me through his computer. “Badass, dude. Alright, describe what you see to me.”

I glanced around. There wasn’t much to look at. A single glowing red dot in the distance marked the one apparent landmark, and a few black grid-covered mountains spiraled toward the sky in jagged peaks. “There’s a red light flickering off on the horizon, at my two o’clock. Should I pursue it?”

“That’s the Grid Point we’re looking for, I’m sure of it. In the lines of code I’m looking at, only two things are coming up red—you and the virus’s Grid Point.”

“Got it,” I said, and I took flight, my demon wings spreading. I took to the open air—it was crisp but indescribable, with a smell I’d never before experienced. This cyberscape smelled vaguely of ozone and burnt plastic but far more complex an aroma than that. I flew toward the red dot, which grew larger as I approached until it became a clear shining dome of crimson radiance.

“Are you close enough yet?” Jeckles asked, a little voice in my ear.

“Just about. I’m descending now.”

“Slow and steady, brother.”

I followed his suggestion, coming in deliberate and cautious and landing on the ground with a faint buzzing sound that surprised me. The red glow surrounded me, and the air seemed to shift around me. I stood in a circle of light that suddenly collapsed beneath my feet, sending me tumbling without warning into a luminous cavern.

“What just happened?!” Jeckles said, almost shouting into my ear.

“The ground gave out. I’m in freefall.”

Descending rapidly, the grid lines of the Pylon Cybergrid on the walls surrounding me whooshed by ever faster, and I realized I was accelerating, but I felt no gust of wind or resistance as I plummeted. “Wait, what the hell? I’m falling too fast!”

“Relax,” the dhampir kobold said, his voice surprisingly calm. “You’ve found her.”

“Her?”

“Mavericka.xxx, the virus.”

With another loud click, my feet hit the ground, and the world stopped whirring past me as my descent ceased. I landed abruptly, but it was like I hadn’t been falling at all—my knees didn’t even bend when I hit the floor of the pit—just that buzzing sound again, the same thing I heard last time I’d landed.

I looked up. The brilliant cyber aurora was gone now. I was surrounded on all sides by the same glitchy, flickering material that made up the entire landscape of this world, the black and pink monotony of grid lines everywhere. The walls formed a dome around me, only the ground remaining a flat surface.
