Chapter 16

The incubus set out a short time later, bathed and dressed in his full cape and mantle. He passed Major on the main dirt road of the base.

“I knew you wouldn’t be asleep yet.”

There were dark circles below his eyes. “There’s too much to see to. But I was heading for bed now.”

Figaru walked with him. “Vandrel and Leatha won’t be returning from Zanzarland. At least not in your lifetime.”

Major’s brow wrinkled. “Good Lord. How will we manage?”

“How is the school managing now?”

“They’re not. It’s still the last month of harvest break.”

“I’ll have to see to that.”

“How will the army get by, Figaru? You can’t take on Vandrel’s duties as well as your own. We really need a demon as general. If I could make a suggestion—it’s probably not the best, but—“

“Major, I’ve already offered the post to Scor.”

He nodded. “It worked out well enough while you were gone.”

They were at the door of Major’s private cabin.

“Um…if I could speak to you a moment in private.”

Major’s anxiety made Figaru wish for an excuse to leave. He sighed and joined the officer inside. The cabin had two rooms decorated by Major’s wife. The carpets, curtains, and mirror made it seem miles away from the rest of the camp. Figaru joined him at the dining table.

“I’ll have to ask your permission to speak freely.”

“You’re always welcome to speak your mind to me, Major.”

Major scowled. “Right, then. What the devil are you thinking? Scor is Jinady’s mate. How can you still think you have rights to him? You’re a pillar of morality in this settlement. What if word got out?”

Figaru detested his embarrassment. He’d avoided considering his plan with Jinady through the settlers’ eyes deliberately.

“I’ll answer your first question: ‘What the devil am I thinking.’ I intend on taking both Jinady and Scor as my mates.”

Major turned away. “Outrageous.”

“Major, when Zuala died my grief was extended needlessly due to starvation. The normal course for a demon after a lover passes is to hibernate for several years. I can’t do that while this settlement relies on me. I love Jinady, but he’ll die eventually. It’s selfish to want a mortal as my mate, but that’s my nature. If I take Jinady I’ll need Scor. I love them both. They love each other. Jinady loves me.”

“Of course you won’t say Scor loves you. No one’s about to swallow that.” He crossed his arms, incensed. “I’d ask why he even consented to be with you, but it’s obvious you’re using Jinady as a lure. Or was it the promotion? No—I don’t imagine that would be enough for him.”

Figaru restrained his anger.

“We’ve got a barn full of traumatized men and boys right now,” Major said. “They were tortured by demons. We’re going to say to them, ‘Stay here where it’s safe. Yes, there are demons here, but they’re good demons. They’re here to protect us. They’re not like the other barbaric demons of this land.’ Then they’ll see our leader—a demon indulging in two lovers. How will that convince them you’re any different?”

He looked away.
