“What’s wrong?” Perry pointed to Conrad’s knee.

Conrad was unaware of grit imbedded in his knees and blood.

After mumbling his bombshell news, Conrad sank to the ground. Memories of him and Sampson washed over him. If it wasn’t for Sampson, he’d never have learned to fish. He didn’t like cleaning the fish, but Sampson ignored his objection. “I still don’t like fishing,” he mumbled.

“Afraid of the water. Can’t swim.” Conrad’s feeble excuses had failed to convince Sampson. Sampson made him take swimming lessons until he reached junior lifesaver. Not complaining about the water ended Sampson’s push for the next course.

If it wasn’t for Sampson, I’d never have learned to ski. My “I might break my leg,” objection hadn’t work. Instead, he coached me. Paid for my first ski trip. He said it was my birthday present.

I like skiing with the guys. And I will go on more ski trips with them even though Sampson won’t be with me.

Conrad settled himself on the ground dimly aware of Perry calling for Arny. He didn’t flinch as Perry used his T-shirt to clean the blood and grit from his knee. When the other guys returned, he sat by himself thinking of Sampson. He joined the rest of the boys for Perry’s memorial service, but he couldn’t share any stories of Sampson. His voice would crack.
