Much later in the day, as Isabel carefully packed her valise for her return trip home, she glanced out the window of her bedchamber. The sun was shining brightly over Hyde Park, and somewhere on the other side of that vast green space, Whitney Hall housed her beloved. The pain of their separating bore ever so deeply within her, still unrelenting. How was she supposed to carry on with her life? She had known love and because of her own silly actions, she had lost it, as well.

She placed a pair of delicate silver slippers into the worn bag. It was good that she would be going home. Knowing Hugh was nearby, seeing reminders of him everywhere, it was more than she could bear. At the parsonage, she could attempt to return to a semblance of her former life. She could take care of her father’s needs, return to cleaning the parish church, and assist the elderly with their mending and their other chores. Much could be done in Buckley to keep her mind busy and off of her heartache, as opposed to here in London where she had to spend most of her days making or receiving social calls, sitting still with teacup in hand, or riding one of the bridle paths in Hyde Park where she would surely run into someone aware of her courtship with the duke. She could not handle living in London now that Hugh was no longer a part of her life.

Bright and early the next morning, she would leave the city and it was possible that she may never return to it again. What reasons would she ever have? Lady Dodsworth resided but an hour’s ride from the village when Parliament was not in session, and she needn’t have reason to visit her at her London town home again. She much preferred Haversham House anyway. Her heart lurched as she remembered who else resided in the Staffordshire countryside. According to Hugh, Southdown’s House was but a short ride from the Dodsworth’s home. Not that it mattered anymore, she thought. Hugh had made it quite clear in his letter that he never wanted to see her again.

A fresh spate of tears spilled onto her cheeks. She had no idea how she was supposed to carry on with her life anymore. Heartsick and alone, she supposed, sadly. Perhaps, she should consider seeking refuge by devoting her life to religious service. Abbeys could be cosy and welcoming, could they not? She shook off the idea. Though she considered herself a woman of faith, at some point, she would very much like to have a husband and children. Even if the thought of anyone other than Hugh as a part of that dream brought about even more tears and pain.
