Chapter Twelve

Triss felt Briona’s body relax as Andrews and Rutherford took on a case involving a knitting and yarn shop, and a pair of warring mystery book club members. The case was particularly challenging to figure out because the book club killer actually followed a script straight out of one of the books they’d read—and didn’t agree on, hence the death. Triss enjoyed it but kept her attention on Briona. The woman had been through the wringer with her grief, and Triss wanted to make sure she had all the support she needed.

Bit of a change from the way you feel about most cops.

It was, but Briona was different. She wasn’t like the LEOs Triss had met in L.A. or the surrounding communities. Briona cared about her town, the people in it, and even Triss. Triss couldn’t completely let go of her experience with other law enforcement officers, but she could let herself believe Briona wasn’t like them.

At least until you tell her about your past.

The traitorous voice jerked her back to reality, and Triss grimaced. She had every intention of telling Briona, but now wasn’t the time. This night and whatever came after was all about Briona’s needs and comfort. Triss would pick a better time to reveal her own trials and tribulations with the past soon.

The intrepid detectives solved the case—the other book club members pointed out the book the killer used as a template, which led them to the killer’s obsession—and the credits rolled. Neither Triss nor Briona moved as the end credit music played.

“Do you want to watch another episode, or head to bed?” Triss nudged Briona a little, tilting her head to meet Briona’s gaze.

“No, I’m pretty tired. I don’t think I could keep track of all the details.” Briona shot her an apologetic smile. “Is it okay if we just go to bed?”

“Yeah, that’s fine. I gotta pee anyway.” Triss turned off the TV and levered herself up. “Can you show me where the bedroom is so I can find it? I’ll brush my teeth and come straight to bed.”

“Yeah. Come with me. There’s an ensuite bathroom you can use.”

Briona grabbed Triss’s bag and led her toward the far side of the house from the entry stairs. They passed through the laundry room to a large bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and a walk-in closet. The décor reminded Triss of those fancy, rustic chic cabins folks could rent around the holidays with handmade quilts in intricate patterns and gleaming wood accents.

“Wow, this room is gorgeous.” Triss shot Briona a smile but kept moving to the bathroom. “I’m gonna pee then I’ll grab my toothbrush.”

She hurried in to use the toilet, but she had to take a moment to calm herself down when she stood to wash her hands. Why was she so excited? Briona hadn’t made any moves that suggested she wanted more intimacy than lying on the couch together, so why was she trying to calm herself down as if they were planning
