CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Pravat

I can't stop thinking about Rama leaving the party with those women, which is pretty hypocritical considering I brought Lin home to stay at my place. But Tida told me to do it, dammit! Rama knows it's just for show, whereas he voluntarily left with those girls.

Do you think he'll do anything with them? I ask myself. Until he met me, his life was so much simpler. He might decide I'm not worth the trouble.

Worried that he's going to come to his senses and break things off with me, I stop pretending to straighten up my apartment and turn to Lin.

"I'm going for a short walk to help me sleep. Please make yourself at home."

I know I'm being rude, but I can't help it. I can't get my mind off Rama and those women. Leaving my apartment with my cell phone in hand, I pause in the hallway to glance at it. It hasn't vibrated since I sent the text to Rama earlier explaining about Tida. I'm dismayed to see the text didn't send, and this entire time, Rama has been clueless as to why I took Lin home with me.

I take the stairs to the lobby, and by the time I reach the lit street outside my building, I'm listening to Rama's phone ringing, fear building inside me. He's not going to answer, either because he's angry with me or because he's…busy.

I curse when I get his voicemail, then dial again. And again. I'm just about to run back upstairs for the keys to my car when he picks up.

"It's about time you answered," I say gruffly, way past rationality at this point.

"I was in the shower," Rama says.

Feeling like a fool, I let out a breath and take a moment to pull myself together.

"Pravat?"

Closing my eyes, I confess, "P'Tida told me to take Lin to my place for the night so the press would see us. I didn't want to. I sent you a text but just found out it didn't go through. I panicked. And I saw you with those two women."

The silence on the other end of the phone lasts way too long. When it finally breaks, I can't believe what I'm hearing.

"Are you laughing?"

Rama snorts. "Sorry, but you're just so cute. What did you think, I went off somewhere to have sex with two women?"

"I didn't know what to think." I rub my eyes. "Honestly, I was more afraid you're having second thoughts about us."

Rama sighs, and something in the sound makes my stomach tighten.

Falling back against the warm brick of the building, I ask, "Are you? Having second thoughts?"

Before he can answer, my eyes land on a car I recognize parked across the street. "Dammit."

"What?" Rama asks.

"There's a reporter watching me. He's probably wondering why I've left my girlfriend upstairs to go outside to make a phone call. Fuck, I hate this so much." Turning, I walk inside the building, giving the night guard a friendly nod as I stride toward the elevators.

Rama's voice is soothing.
