At last, she heard Lady Abigail's voice. "Charlotte! There you are. I am positively exhausted, aren't you?"

Charlotte forced a smile as she joined her employer. "Lady Abigail, I saw you stand up with Lord Calder for two sets! I have no doubt you are tired."

She crossed her fingers, hoping her mistress was ready to leave.

Lady Abigail fanned herself. "Indeed, indeed. In any case, several others have already left, so we should be on our way. Have the carriage brought round, will you?"

"An excellent idea, my lady." Charlotte tried not to sound too eager in her agreement. She longed to leave this place behind, to escape the cloying heat and noise of the crowded ballroom, and the lingering memory of Thornfield's touch.

After what seemed an interminable wait, their carriage finally arrived. Charlotte barely waited for the steps to be lowered before climbing inside, settling into the cushions with a sigh of relief.

At last, they were moving, the familiar rocking motion of the carriage wheels soothing her frayed nerves. She closed her eyes, listening to the clip-clop of the horses' hooves and Lady Abigail's idle chatter.

Gradually, the tension eased from Charlotte's body. By the time they arrived at Cavendish House, she felt nearly restored to her usual equanimity. Still, she would be glad when this evening was well and truly behind her. A restorative sleep would be just what she needed.
