CHAPTER 15

PC Umar Jabal.

‘I don’t believe it,’ he whispered to himself.

‘What is it?’

‘One of the guys in the photos. He’s inside the cathedral now. He’s one of the constables who evacuated it. I saw him cosying up to the Superintendent.’

‘Shit,’ DC Edwards said, her voice distant.

Then, through the microphone in his ear, he heard the sounds of car doors opening. The team coming to his rescue.

‘No, wait!’ he told them. ‘We can’t all go in. I will instead. I’ll do it.’

‘Why?’ Tyler asked, aggrieved that he’d been sidelined.

‘Because he’s seen my face – he knows that I’m friendly. If he sees any of you approaching, he might get suspicious. And we don’t yet know what his motives are; nor do we know what he’s planning. He could be detonating the device for all we know. Plus I’m closer to the action. It’s safer if I go alone. You guys wait outside for Mamadou to give you further instruction.’

Jake started towards the entrance without waiting for a response from his colleagues. One of the terrorist-cell members was in the building along with a suspicious package. There was no knowing what was going to happen, or when – and he needed to find Jabal before anything did.

He paced around the perimeter of the cordon until he found a quiet section. Then he ducked beneath the tape and slipped through an entrance on the side, armed with a warrant card he wasn’t afraid to flash if anyone stood in his way.

Inside the cathedral, he was immediately faced with a massive stairwell that spun up the wall, reminding Jake of a scene from Harry Potter. The plaque on the wall told him there was a total of 528 steps.

As he approached them, he heard the radio frequency stutter in his ear, then a deafening blast of white noise disrupted their communications systems. Perhaps it was the bomb squad’s X-ray machines frazzling the systems. Or perhaps it was something worse.

‘Tyler – you there?’ Jake asked, coming to an abrupt stop. The sound of his voice echoed up and down the archaic stairwell.

‘Yeah – What – do – hear me?’

‘Tyler, I can’t hear you. What are you saying?’ Jake yelled into his microphone. Any opportunity of being discreet was almost entirely gone.

‘Talk – How – can we – What – need?’

This was pointless. There was no point trying any further. In the end, he sent Tyler a text message requesting a running commentary of Umar Jabal’s movements. The signal inside the cathedral was weak, but with any luck, the higher he climbed, the better it might be.

At least, that was the theory.

Jake hit send, and as soon as the message delivered, his signal disappeared. Pushing it out of his mind, he started the monumental climb up the steps.

Five hundred and twenty-seven to go.

Five hundred and twenty-six.

Five hundred and twenty-five.

Before long, his thighs and calves began to ache. The effects of the past forty-eight hours – the chipped bone in his hip from an earlier car collision;
