Chapter 22

The next few weeks passed rapidly for Lysandra. She spent her days learning everything she could about what was required each day to make Blackwolf Keep run successfully. By working side by side with the servants, she learned every aspect of their daily routines. She brought water to the men when they practiced their swordplay in the garrison, and complimented the work they put into protecting Blackwolf Keep. Lysandra continued her quest to earn the respect of Aiden’s people, but there was still a wall built between them.

With perseverance, her charm and daring smiles warmed more than just the serving girls. Some of the ladies of Blackwolf were now willing to engage in conversation during the afternoon sewing circle. Lysandra’s fine embroidery skills were admired by many each day as she shared ways to create new stitches with them eagerly. Lysandra was starting to feel a little more relaxed each day, but she knew if she wanted to win the hearts of those in Blackwolf Keep, she would have to be trusted with whatever secret they hid from the world outside.

She could not help but reflect on his haunting words that night, words that denied the gentle feelings she had started to feel for him. What else is there? It echoed around inside her head like a haunting lament. Unfortunately, Lysandra knew there was so much more to be desired in a union. Lysandra wondered if his parents had loved each other half as deeply as her parents had. It did not scare her that he lacked a true knowledge of love, for she had very little experience with it outside of her parents. Her lips pursed together and her eyebrows furrowed in deep thought before she decided that he was right. They fit well together, but while he was content with just that, she was filled with hope that even this relationship could change with time. Until then, she would continue on the path that she had set on the moment she left Elkliss Keep.

Her nights were spent in Aiden’s arms, learning to harness the passion he created within her. Every night differed from the last, and when she thought he would have his fill of her, he gathered her that much closer, as if he were reaching for her as an anchor from the darkness that clouded his face.

Aiden’s demeanor that morning had been quite alarming. He was barely able to keep his agitation beneath the surface, something that seemed so out of character for the serious nature he usually exuded. Lysandra paid close attention to him, as well as the people of Blackwolf. Everyone seemed to suffer the same affliction, everyone except the outsiders who walked even more cautiously than normal as they dodged angry words left and right. It finally sank in that today was the full moon, and that for some reason, it affected the mood of the people. It was strange to see something so small as the approaching night wear deep on the shoulders of the people.
