‘How was cricket training, Jamie?’ asks Nan, as the boys arrive home.

Without a word, Jamie storms through the kitchen and heads to his bedroom slamming the door behind him.

‘Not good, I take it,’ says Nan. She looks at Garry for an explanation.

Garry can’t contain his excitement. ‘It was amazing, Nan! I’m in the team!’

‘What?’ replies Nan. ‘The under-16s?’

‘Yep,’ says Garry. ‘I’m playing on Saturday. I’m in the actual team.’

‘That’s unbelievable, Garry,’ says Nan. ‘Then why on earth is Jamie in such a grump? Isn’t he happy you’ll both be in the team together?’

‘He’s not in the team. Just me.’

‘Wait,’ says Nan. ‘So, you made the team, but your big brother didn’t? How is that even possible?’

‘Apparently I’m a good spinner,’ says Garry. ‘That’s what the coach said.’

‘And Jamie?’

‘The bowlers are super fast, Nan,’ says Garry. ‘They’re hard to bat against.’

‘I see,’ says Nan. ‘Well, that’s awkward.’ She drums her fingers on the kitchen bench. ‘Okay, I need to know exactly what happened. Grab a stool and tell me everything.’

Garry explains the whole afternoon.

‘That’s the most amazing thing I’ve heard in a long time, Garry,’ says Nan. ‘Everything after you left here is kind of mind-blowing. I didn’t actually know it was possible to spin a ball so much it’d make a fizzing sound, and that’s the least amazing part.’
