SECOND CLASS

Gray and I wait in chairs at the 122nd Precinct. Welker paces the semi-crowded room and keeps eyeing the desk Sergeant. I would too if I gave a shit. The guy rolled his eyes at the mention of our names. I had a feeling this would happen. Psychics and cops don’t mix. At least in my experience.

We sit around for a good half hour. As far as I know, we’re on time. Kind of rude to keep us waiting like this. At least seat us in another room with donuts and coffee instead of leaving us to mingle with the victims of Staten Island in a lake of chairs.

The pill Dr. Thompson gave me must be working. A few of these people have black eyes and broken bones. Although, I experience the violence they’ve been through, I don’t feel the pain. I hope it goes this easy when I’m alone with the dead victims in the case.

“Mr. Welker,” a man says. “Sorry to keep you waiting.”

He’s in his mid-fifties with a clean-shaven face and cropped salt and pepper hair. He wears a suit and his badge and gun are secured around his belt. He smiles and says, “I’m Lieutenant Ardmore. I believe we spoke on the phone earlier.”

Welker shakes his hand and shares pleasantries with him. Gray nudges me and makes a chatting mouth with his hand. I smirk. After a bullshit conversation about the drive over and the amount of traffic we experienced, the two men turn to Gray and me. We both stand and stretch out our best smiles. Ardmore arches his thin brows.

“Wow, so these are the psychics?” he asks.

Welker introduces us.

“I wasn’t expecting kids,” Ardmore says.

“Kids?” Gray asks. “I see no kids here.”

I pretend to rub an ache in my forehead, to hide my embarrassment.

“I assure you, Lieutenant. Miki and Gray are two of the best in our organization. They have high accuracy rates and have proven themselves to be assets to the group.”

Ardmore nods and lowers his head. “Listen, I’ll be up front with you kids. When my captain asked me to get in contact with Elite for this case, I was against it. I still am. I believe in good old-fashioned detective work. I even pushed to get the FBI involved and no decent cop does that. But my captain is my captain if you know what I mean? So I’m going to give you kids a try so that way I can get real help. I don’t want you to feel bad if you think I’m disrespecting you. Do we understand each other?”

Oh, yeah. You’re an asshole. I understand.

“Yes, sir,” Gray and I say.

“Good.” Ardmore holds the door for us. Gray and I follow Welker. As we pass the desk Sergeant, Gray leans in and asks, “Wonder if he would still look like a dick with a condom around his head.”
