Artifact management

In the world of software engineering, an artifact can mean many things to many different people. Some engineers may see an artifact as an executable program, an installation package, or a series of libraries. Others may see an artifact as a collection of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files that make up a static web application. Regardless of the type, an artifact in CI/CD terms is anything that can be deployed to one or more environments to provide functionality.

Storing artifacts can be done in several ways. In most cases, artifacts are stored in a location that is accessible to agents of deployment, whether those are other engineers, other pipelines, or even repositories for targets such as Docker images. GitHub has a built-in artifact repository called GitHub Packages, which we’ll take a closer look at when we talk about setting up the CD pipeline later in this chapter.
