Chapter Sixteen

Ms. Pac-Man has dick-sucking lips.

Parker burst out laughing as he read Micah’s text while he walked out of his father’s place. He’d spent an hour after work there, sitting with his father in silence again while his dad watched home improvement shows. The sound of the TV had grated on him like nothing else. Parker had tried to make conversation, but his dad hadn’t provided answers beyond one-worders. The anniversary for Mom was coming up too, but when Parker brought up visiting her grave, his dad might as well have turned to stone.

His skin felt like he’d wrapped it in plastic, like he needed to tear off the effects of that visit. However, Micah’s text slashed right through the shit way he was feeling.

What are you up to?

Parker shot a quick text back. The idea of going home carrying this heaviness sounded like garbage, but he didn’t have any clients lined up at Whipped this week, and he didn’t want to be a constant burden on Meg and Tristan when he got in these moods. They never hesitated to call him out on it either, and tonight he wanted to lose himself in some avoidance, not process the pain he put himself through with every visit.

Got drunk with Pixie, and we’re walking home.

Parker chewed on his lower lip. Playing was out of the question if Micah had been drinking, but maybe he wouldn’t be averse to meeting up.

For fucking what? Parker leaned against the side of his car and scrubbed at his face. Micah was his play partner, not a relationship. Parker wasn’t destined to come home to anyone at the end of the day, no matter how much the thought made his bones ache with longing.

All it took was one visit to Mom’s grave to morph that longing into sheer terror.

He’d gotten so damn tangled up at this point, but he couldn’t return to his home alone, especially not like this.

Parker shot off another text.

Want to go to Musée Mécanique? I’ll pick you up.

Hanging out didn’t mean anything beyond that. Besides, Micah might want a night in with his best friend and turn him down anyway. He’d just seen Parker’s sorry ass this morning.

You’re on.

Relief washed over him in a strong torrent. He couldn’t delude himself out of that one. Something about Micah’s presence injected new life into him, and after spending an hour around his dad, he sorely needed that. Even with spreading out the visits for self-protection, each one still dragged him under like no time had passed.

But he couldn’t just abandon his dad.

Couldn’t leave him to become another grave to visit. Parker understood the pain of losing her too. How the empty void threatened to consume him some days. His fingertips numbed, and he sucked in a sharp breath to seize control back. He hopped into the driver’s seat, turned on the ignition, and drove away to pick up the mouthy brat who’d utterly stolen his attention.

“You know, the more hype you pile onto this place, the less likely I am to enjoy it,” Micah said.
