MADDY

On Tuesday morning, Jace still didn’t come to class, and Maddy still hadn’t heard a single word from the guys.

When Maddy finished class, she didn’t feel like waiting around for her night class. She just wanted to go home.

It was pouring rain when she stepped out of the building. Between the way it was coming down and the wind, her damn umbrella didn’t make a bit of difference.

She was walking through the parking lot when a car she didn’t recognize pulled up beside her.

Now what?

“Hi, Maddy, I don’t know if you remember me or not,” said a deep, authoritative voice from inside the car.

She bent down a bit to peer through the window.

Friendly, brown eyes smiled back at her, and the man’s dark-blond hair, which held a touch of grey, blew in the wind.

“Officer Todd?” she questioned, suddenly worried.

Her heart was pounding against her ribs. Did something happen to the guys?

“That’s me. Can I give you a ride home?” He gestured to the passenger seat. “It’s not a very nice day for you to be walking.”

He wasn’t her favorite person, but it beat getting soaked. And Officer Todd might have information on the guys.

She hurried around to the passenger side, opened the door, folded up her umbrella, and climbed inside. Glancing over, she noticed Officer Todd was out of uniform. He wore jeans and a long-sleeved, blue-button down shirt.

“You look so different out of your uniform.” She almost said he appeared normal.

“It’s my day off.” He checked to his right before pulling out of the parking lot.

“Is there something I can help you with? Did something happen to the guys?” she asked, holding her breath.

“As far as I know, the guys are fine. I haven’t talked to them in a while. Cody mentioned you’re upset with me, though he wouldn’t tell me why and said I should ask you,” he said, stopping at the red light.

Damn you, Cody. Sometimes these guys were worse than girls with keeping their mouths shut. She was more than upset. She was furious at Officer Todd for asking Ryder to put his life in danger when he’s not even a cop.

“How could you ask Ryder to go undercover?” she demanded. “Asking him to sell his body when his own damn mother made him do the same thing? He was just starting to understand that sex doesn’t equal love, and you go and ask that of him,” she said, enraged and balling her hands into fists.

Officer Todd paled. “I’m sorry, what? Jared never told me anything about Ryder’s family.” He gripped the steering wheel tighter. “The only thing I knew was that he was always over at their house, and Jared thought of him as one of his own.”

Maddy bit her lip and turned to stare out the window. Dammit, she screwed up. Todd didn’t know anything. How stupid could she be? How was she going to get out of this without telling him all of Ryder’s dirt?

Who cares if you do? Where is Ryder? He’s been acting cagy.
