“What are you going to do about it?” Aleister James demanded. The disgruntled vampire stood near the fireplace in the parlor and faced her.

“I hear your concerns and I’m very thankful that you have brought it to my attention.” Lethia hated playing politics, but the vampires all had a right to be heard. This was a serious issue. If their mates were disappearing, then that would affect the next generation of vampires.

Their meeting had been going on for about an hour. The servants were keeping them stocked with the best blood while the vampires shared their complaints with her. Each of their stories started as her own with Alima had. They had been notified of their mate, received their packet of information, and then no mate had showed. The guards who were to escort the humans to their vampires were unable to locate their mates. It was as if the humans had disappeared into thin air.

Her personal guards were present. Lane, Enoch, and Izora were spread around the room, posted along the walls. Their duty was to ensure her safety and keep order with this meeting. So far, the vampires were calmer than she would be had Alima not been found.

“We’ve waited so long for this day. When it should be the happiest moment to finally be able to meet the one person fate has gifted me, then to find out she went missing, it’s devastating,” Virgil Rankins said. He ran a hand through his hair and lifted his goblet to his mouth. He downed the blood and set the cup down on a table near him.

“I want you to understand that we are going to work around the clock until we find out what happened to your mates,” she promised. Lethia held her goblet to have something to keep her hand busy. She wasn’t truly interested in drinking it.

The scent of the blood wasn’t as sweet as her mate’s. The bond was growing between them. The taste of Alima was still a memory on her tongue. Her body was aching to have more of her sweet, copper blood. Aubrey was right. She was going to have to claim her mate soon. Once she had her first full drink from Alima, she wouldn’t need to receive blood from anyone else. Her mate’s blood would sustain her for all eternity.

“In the meantime, what are we going to do about other mates for vampires? I just wouldn’t recommend anyone go through what we are going through,” Cleon Wilkes spoke up. He was the calmest of the men standing before her. A haunted look hovered in his eyes. “I can’t help but think that my mate is somewhere injured and needing me. He had just moved to Maine, and from what my report said, he had no family nearby.”

The door to the parlor opened with a servant girl entering. She went around with her tray, exchanging the men’s goblets for full ones.

“My men won’t rest until we have word on what is going on.
