Self-portrait from deep within

When Douglas Harding saw this self-portrait: by the Austrian philosopher and physicist Ernst Mach, the penny dropped. It was an important moment in Douglas Harding’s development in understanding his own seeing.

Douglas understood what he was seeing because of this self-portrait from deep within.

Mach drew himself from the perspective of the First Person.

“I lie upon my sofa. If I close my right eye, the picture represented in the accompanying cut is presented to my left eye. In a frame formed by the ridge of my eyebrow, by my nose, and by my mustache, appears a part of my body, so far as visible, with its environment. (Mach. E.).

A self-portrait like this is incredibly rare.

Most painters look in the mirror, thereby objectifying themselves, and paint themselves from the perspective of the third person. Like this:
