But what about all the great things you wanted to accomplish before your freedom would be compromised by motherhood? If this is a big obstacle for you, know that I and a large group of other women are standing right beside you.

It’s true that once you’re a mom, you are probably going to be less likely to pack a sack and hike out to the wilderness. You’re also less likely to jet off to New York for the weekend with girlfriends. With baby on board, there will be more planning involved for any adventure, even when you bring baby along. As my mom likes to say, “Life is a trade-off. Make your choice.” There are no wrong choices; just different outcomes.

If you haven’t already done this exercise, now is a great time. Make a list, you can call it a Bucket List if you want, of all the things you thought or dreamed you would have accomplished in your life by now or that you want to accomplish before you die. Review your list to see if any of the items are restricted by time (like you need to do it before someone dies or stops offering the event), money (that you need to accumulate first), or age (those bouncy houses for kiddos seven and under).

With this clear picture of all the things you want to do – they are captured and you can add to the list as you discover more – you can decide if you’re going to let them get in the way of being a mother or not. You get to decide if something on your list is for you to do or work toward now or later. There is time for everything that you’re actually going to do in your life, whatever that includes or excludes. Is being a mother on your list? Is that something for now or for later?
