The empress was unfazed by his intense malice. “Did you not just join forces with Emperor Barel of Ronelia?”

“…Hmph, he’s a special case. He’s the king of your inferior race, and his transcendent strength far surpasses your usual limitations.”

It seemed like Barel Ronelia had somehow earned the demons’ respect.

“Do you intend to search all of Liengard by yourself, Mr. Grazalio? That sounds like a difficult task…”

“Hah, do not measure me by human standards. With my demonic might, I won’t even need a day to search every corner of this puny country!” Seele said with a sneer. He clearly had no intention of changing his abusive attitude.

The empress’s guards watched in silence, clenching their fists so tightly they started to bleed. Clearly, it was taking everything they had to retain their composure in the face of their sovereign being insulted.

“I grow bored of talking. I’m going to give you a choice,” Seele said. He drew his sword and smiled maliciously.

The empress sighed loudly. Her attempt at negotiation had failed. “Haah… I knew there would be no point in trying to reason with an unenlightened demon.”

“…What did you just say?”

“My apologies, but I have had enough of this conversation. Do it now.”

“““Gravity Square!””” four deep voices shouted, summoning four giant green boards that closed in on Seele from all sides.

“Ngh…?!” he grunted.

Four senior holy knights had taken position in the corners of the hall and unleashed a restraining spell with perfect timing. I didn’t know when they could’ve possibly coordinated that with the empress.

“A gravity ability, huh…? Is this really all the strength you could manage with four people?!” Seele shouted, trying to break out of the gravity spell.

“““Water Jail!””” another group of senior holy knights shouted, stopping him with a clear sphere of water.

“What?!” Seele gasped, completely immobilized by the gravity boards and Water Jail.

Rodis jumped up behind the demon with his sword raised. “You’re dead!”

He and the holy knights’ chain attack was perfectly coordinated; they must have practiced this maneuver countless times.

Incredible… I can see why these senior holy knights were entrusted with protecting government personnel! I thought.

Unfazed at being back into a corner, Seele looked at Rodis as if he were an insect. “Execration—Fire Torture!” he yelled.

“Whuh?!” Rodis lost his balance and tumbled over with his sword still brandished. “Blargh… Hack, hack…” He hit the ground hard and coughed violently.

What just happened?! I thought, beyond confused. I heard someone moan behind me.

“Urgh…”

“Lia?!” I shouted. She nestled against my body as her legs gave out from under her. “What’s going on?! Stay with me, Lia!”

“Haah, haah… I’m in pain…and I’m so…hot…,” she muttered.

I put a hand to her forehead. It was searing to the touch. Where did this fever come from? Wait, what’s this crest… There was a dark red crest on the back of her neck. Is this a curse?!

Curses were a mysterious power that monsters could inflict. Almost nothing was known about their effects, what triggered them, or how to dispel them.

Oh yeah, Lia said demons are a superior species of monster, so it isn’t surprising that Seele can inflict curses.
