The door opened into a small, dim room.

“What’s this…?”

There was a large poster pinned to an old bulletin board on the wall in front of us. I could see in the faint light that it contained warnings for the haunted house.

PLEASE REFRAIN FROM RUNNING INSIDE THE BUILDING.

PLEASE STAY WHERE YOU ARE IF YOU FEEL UNWELL. A SERVANT WILL COME TO GET YOU.

PLEASE BEAR IN MIND THAT REMOTE CONTROL SOUL ATTIRE WILL BE USED FOR CERTAIN DISPLAYS.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION.

The warnings were written like this was a real haunted house, and reading made me even more excited.

“Lia, Rose.”

“Y-yes?!”

“Wh-what is it?!”

Just saying their names caused them to practically leap out of their shoes. Are they really going to be okay? I was more than a little worried. They had both stubbornly insisted that they weren’t afraid, though, so there was nothing I could do about it.

“We’ve read the notice, so do you want to go ahead and start?” I asked, pointing toward the only door in the room.

“Y-yeah, sure…”

“R-right…”

They both nodded gravely with meek expressions. Seeing that, I opened the door. It led to a narrow corridor with black curtains on either side. Pale blue lights placed throughout lit the pathway and showed us the suggested route.

“Wh-whoa… Th-th-this looks kind of ominous. Not that I’m frightened or anything!” Lia insisted.

“Sh-Shii, Lilim, and Tirith did a really good job… I’m not scared either, though!” Rose claimed.

“Ah-ha-ha, yeah they really nailed the atmosphere,” I responded, finding their bluffing amusing. I took one step forward into the hallway, and heard the door behind us lock with a click.

““EEEEK!!!””

Lia and Rose both screamed incoherently.

“Hmm… Looks like they locked the entrance,” I observed.

I tried multiple times to open the door we’d just passed through, but it didn’t budge.

“Wh-wh-what should we do, Allen?!” Lia cried.

“W-we’re trapped in here!!” Rose shouted.

They both shook violently in panic. It was rare to see them shaken like this; it was kind of cute.

“It’s okay. Let’s just calm down,” I reassured them.

“Whoo… Haa… O-okay. Thanks.”

“Phew… Sorry, that surprised me a bit.”

I waited as they both regained their composure.

“Wanna get moving?” I asked, and we finally started to make our way through the haunted house.

I walked in front with Lia and Rose behind me to either side. They were both clinging to the sleeves of my uniform, which made walking very difficult. I couldn’t exactly tell them to let go of me, though, given how they were both trembling with fright.

That locking sound was a really effective way to set people on edge. Humans naturally felt anxiety and fear when locked up. In light of that, locking the door was a simple yet effective way to kick off the haunted house.

I’m pretty sure Tirith was the director. A quick scan of our surroundings revealed a cracked mirror, a single slipper, a half-open locker, and many other small props placed about the area to indirectly stir fear in the hearts of visitors. It’s all so well-thought-out for creating a spooky environment. I could see how this haunted house caused over ten people to faint last year.
