“And there’s more,” I continue, warmth growing in my voice. “My friend Natalie, who's a huge fan of yours, sent me this playlist when I first moved back here. I was reluctant at first but fell head over heels for your music. I’m not an expert, but I know a powerhouse of talent when I see one—and Triss, that’s you.”

“You… listen to my songs? Even after admitting that you don’t like me?”

“I thought I didn’t like you, Triss. That was before I really knew who you were. I had only other people’s perceptions and our families’ histories to go by. But working for you, I’ve seen you’re so much more than just an arrogant rockstar. You’re human, with flaws, hopes, and vulnerabilities.”

“Hey, I worked very hard to create that ‘arrogant rock star’ persona. Don’t just strip it away from me,” Triss says, her voice edging back toward its usual confident tone.

“I’m sorry, but I know the truth now. You can’t play the ‘mysterious, full of herself genius’ card with me anymore. There’s a heart in there,” I say, gently touching the space where her chest meets the cut of her tank top, feeling every atom in my body buzz with more electricity than necessary.

Triss’s eyes linger on my finger for a second, and a quizzical look flashes through her eyes.

“So, you’re not an enemy after all. You’re a fan?”

“Whoa, that’s going too far,” I smile.

“You listen to my songs on repeat. I’d say that’s what fans do,” Triss replies, her smile lingering, momentarily pushing aside the problems she’s facing.

“That’s beside the point. All I’m saying is, you’re a talented artist. If even I can see it, a woman who was practically programmed to hate you, then you should see it too.”

Triss leans back in her chair, stroking the sides of her face with her fingers, deep in thought.

“I think I might have just found the theme for my next song,” she whispers to herself.

“Care to explain?” I ask.

“No. I think I’d rather show you the end product. But thanks, Sydney. Turns out you aren’t a complete pain in the ass after all.”

“So does that mean you will reduce the rent, and free me of my servitude to you?”

“Yes, after a month, as we had discussed. Until then, I’m sorry but you’ll have to tolerate me a little longer.”

“You know what? I’m okay with that. Unless you plan on suddenly reverting to the bitch I met on the first day, I think I can survive a few more days.”

“I will always be a bitch, babe. I just control my bitchiness for the few privileged ones.”

“And am I one of the privileged ones?”

“Depends on whether you’re willing to fulfill the promise of granting me whatever I want, as part of our deal for me winning the surfing competition.”

Wow, even after playing her part-time therapist, she’s still intent on engaging in these verbal duels. She must really enjoy the banter, or maybe I just made a mistake by showing Triss I listen to her songs—a move that might come back to bite me in the ass later.
