PLACE OF LUMPY CROSSINGS

I once asked a woman here in Belfast to help me understand what it was like growing up here during the Troubles. The Troubles were a multidecade violent conflict that killed more than thirty-five hundred people, mostly where I am now in the northern part of the island of Ireland. The woman I spoke with remembered when she was a child and a loud noise boomed in the distance one night. It scared her, and so she cried for her mother. “My mum walks in to assure me everything’s all right,” she told me. “And Mum says, ‘Don’t fret, dear. It wasn’t thunder. It was just a bomb.’”
