Chapter

“Where should we begin? Where did you see her last?” Chayce questioned.

“The Watchdog,” I replied.

Jay started the engine of his cruiser and nodded, “Then that is where we will start.” As we coasted down the paved blacktop, he grabbed his radio from the dash. “Dispatch, come back.”

“Hi, sheriff.” a nasally sounding young woman replied. She was excited to hear from my brother. It made me wonder if he was dipping his dick into her on the side. “Guess what?”

Jay sighed deeply while rolling his eyes. I was wrong about that assumption. He shook his head while coasting through the open gate and turning onto the road that we had taken to get here. He pressed the button to reply, “What’s up?”

“You won’t believe what happened. Carl caught Anna Worsinski and William Cross in Miss Bank’s barn this time.” She sounded as if she were chewing gum and I imagined her sitting behind a desk and filing or painting her nails. Definitely not my brother’s type. “They are both being held for indecent exsop...exsp...ex-something.”

I turned to look at my cousin in the back seat with wide eyes and mouthed the words, what the fuck. Jay pressed the button to cut her off, “Exposure?”

“Yeah, that’s it.”

“That’s nice, Vicki. Listen, put an APB on Danny Walker.”

There was a long pause. “A what?” Another pause. “Oh, you mean one of those search thingies?”

Chayce grabbed the headrest of Jay’s seat and leaned forward. “Is she fuckin’ serious?”

“Yes, Vicki,” Jay replied as calmly as he could. It was clear that she was irritating him and I couldn’t help but snicker. “One of those search thingies.”

“Incompetent nitwit,” Anya grumbled in an annoyed tone from behind me.

“The hot guy from the bar?”

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I stated and nearly snatched the radio out of his hand but he pulled away too quickly.

“Yes, Vicki. Danny Walker.”

“What did he do?”

“For his sake, he better pray nothing happened,” I growled deeply with a tight jaw. Visions of him all over Phoebe played with my emotions.

“That doesn’t matter right now. Vicki, please do as I ask,” my brother expressed.

“You got it, sheriff? T-t-y-l.”

Jay grumbled deeply before replying one final time. “Sheriff Johnston, out.” He shook his head and stopped before pulling out onto the lonely stretch of highway back to Devils Bend. I knew he could feel all of our eyes on him. “She’s young.”

“Young?” Chayce announced. “She’s a moron.”

“Seriously, bro. She doesn’t know what an APB is?” I injected with a chuckle.

“Has she been living under a rock?” Anya questioned and giggled. It was the first time I heard any sort of humor come from her. It was adorable. She enjoyed laughing. I would use that to my advantage.

“Maybe she was hit square in the head with one,” Chayce laughed.

Jay’s expression grew tight, “Alright. That’s enough. Cut her some slack. She just graduated from college and needed a job.”

“That girl went to college? Gods help us all,” Chayce chuckled and sat back.

“She’s not that bad.”

“Am I the only one
