Chapter Six

The sun was starting its descent as Jamie climbed the staircase to his front door, rubbing at his still sore arm. His chest was heavy with guilt as he stared at his hand on the doorknob. He didn’t want to open the door, didn’t want to face the demon he was planning to betray. The fact that this demon was his soulmate only added to the weight. This wasn’t some faceless stranger he was screwing over, and it made it all the more deplorable.

He didn’t want to betray Lyn, but it wasn’t like he had much of a choice. What Cyrus wanted, Cyrus got. It was how Jamie’s little world had always worked, and Lyn’s entrance into his life didn’t change that, no matter how much he wished it did.

It wasn’t like he hadn’t tried, right? He’d put up a fight; he’d just lost. And now Lyn would pay the price. They both would.

With a fortifying breath, Jamie forced his face into a semblance of calm control, unlocked the door, and pushed it open.

He’d barely crossed the threshold when Lyn’s irate voice screeched, “Where in hell’s fire have you been?”

“Honey, I’m home,” he muttered as he shut the door behind him.

Unamused, Lyn stomped across the apartment and planted themself in front of him, arms crossing over their chest. “I’ve been waiting for over an hour. I thought you were dead.”

“Why would I be dead?”

“Because you’re human and almost everything in this world has evolved to eat you. To be honest, I don’t understand how you’ve lasted this long without being digested.” Three orange tails quivered anxiously behind the demon’s back, and Jamie snorted.

“Well, as you can see, I’m alive and… undigested.” Jamie brushed past Lyn, shuddering when their arms touched and that now-familiar jolt shot through him. He hated the way every cell in his body responded. He hated how much he was starting to like it.

Lyn trailed after him, repeating their earlier question. “Where were you?”

“Running errands.” The lie filled his mouth with ash, and he detoured toward the kitchen to get a glass of water to wash the dishonesty away.

“Like what?” Lyn pressed.

“Like shopping! You cooked all the food in my fridge,” he snapped as he yanked a cup from the cupboard.

“You don’t have any bags,” they pointed out, and Jamie mentally kicked himself.

Why was he bad at lying all of sudden?

“The stores were closed.” Sweat broke out over the back of his neck as he faced the sink, filling his glass with water. He could feel Lyn’s stare boring into his head, but he refused to turn around.

“All of them?” Their tone lilted at the end, conveying disbelief.

“Yup, it’s a holiday,” he doubled-down.

“What holiday?”

In a desperate attempt to stall, he made a show of drinking his water as he covertly pulled out his phone and opened his calendar app. Miracle of miracles, there was actually a holiday listed. Turning and slamming his empty glass on the counter, he barked a humorless laugh.

“It’s Flag Day,” he announced with more enthusiasm than the holiday called for.
