Reading Exam Challenges
What obstacles may you face during the reading exam and how can you overcome these?
i) Text Comprehension: only research the information required
Avoid trying to absorb the text in depth. This is not what you are required to do in this test. Concentrate on answering the questions rather than understanding the text! Do not try to translate the text subconsciously into your own language while you are reading, it will only confuse you. The process of reading academic texts in your second language is not the same as reading material written in your first language.
ii) Complex Vocabulary: just focus on what you need to know
Highlight key terms which are obvious, relevant and necessary for general understanding rather than worrying about words which are obscure, insignificant and extraneous to the questions actually asked. You do not need to know the majority of the words from the text in order to answer most of the questions in the test.
iii) Difficult & Boring Text Topics: read for detail not for interest.
The subject matter of the passages may seem really obscure, extremely dull or excessively complicated. This is intentional. The test designers are seeking to replicate the verbal complexity of real-life academic texts to validate candidatesâ reading knowledge for higher education entrance or professional registration. Your task is to find the details inside the passages which you need to answer the questions asked. Academic text books are not written to entertain but to educate the reader. Excavate the text to extract the information you need to pass the exam.
iv) Time Pressure: divide your test time into different reading stages
You have 60 minutes for 3 passages meaning you should spend an average of 20 minutes on each passage. Split your time into four separate stages and spend no more than 5 minutes on each. You should spend 75% of your reading time trying to answer the questions and only 25% of your test time studying the base text.
a) Skim the text: Speed-read the passage to get the gist of the text
b) Scan the questions: Investigate and highlight critical points of detail
c) Guess the answers: Attempt to respond to all questions intuitively
d) Check the guesses: Review the evidence confirming your responses
v) Task Concentration: make sure you read analytically not reflectively
The reading test is intended to be a mentally demanding academic process and is likely to be cerebrally challenging. In order to avoid getting worn down and worn out by reading three extended passages in one hour it is advisable to focus on the key points of detail which the questions require you to investigate. Do not waste time reflecting upon the philosophical implications raised by the theme of the text.
You do need to be prepared to face at least one text articulating an abstract concept which may need to be recognised and analysed. However, this reading test is still primarily concerned with identifying and distinguishing informational details, as opposed to assimilating and interpreting intellectual ideas.
