3 Problems with words ending in <ie>, <y> and <e>

For words ending in <ie>, drop the <e> and change the <i> to a <y> when adding the suffix <-ing>; for example, lie and lying, die and dying.

For words ending in <y>, change the <y> to an <i> when adding the suffixes <ed>, <er> or <able> if the <y> is preceded by a consonant, but retain the <y> if it is preceded by a vowel or when adding the suffix <-ing>. For example, carry, carried, carrier and carriable, but enjoy, enjoyed, enjoyable and enjoying. When adding the suffix <ly>, change the <y> to an <i>; for example, necessary and necessarily, happy and happily (exceptions: shyly and coyly).

For words ending in <e>, retain the <e> if the suffix begins with a consonant but drop it if it begins with a vowel. Examples: use and useful, but usable (no <e>); care and careful, but caring (no <e>); hope and hopeless, but hoping (no <e>). Exceptions to dropping the <e> occur when the root word ends in <-ee>, <-ce> and <-le>, for example: agree and agreeable, peace and peaceable, sale and saleable; exceptions to retaining the <e> include argue and argument, whole and wholly, true and truly.
