Let’s Get Growing!

Step 1: When to Plant Mint

The ultimate time to plant mint outdoors is in autumn or spring. After all, the threat of frost is over for the season and mint is a hardy perennial.

Step 2: Where to Plant Your Mint

You will find that mint has a penchant for spreading and overtaking, especially if it has access to a good water supply. If planting outdoors, choose a spot in the garden where you will find it easy to control it. A nifty trick to keep it under control is to plant it in a large pot. Alternatively, you can sink a bottomless pot into the ground, if you prefer the in-ground growing appeal. Mint grows well in full or partial sun, and although it can grow in the shade, it might not be as enthusiastic.

Step 3: Select the Right Container

Many mint appreciators will tell you that terracotta pots are the best to grow mint successfully as these pots release excess moisture, aiding in drainage. Any container you select will need drainage holes and be no smaller than twelve inches in diameter so as to not restrict the plant too much.

Step 4: Adding Soil to the Mix

Mint thrives in rich loamy, well-draining soil with a neutral or acidic PH. Mint plants do not like wet feet, but thrive when they have access to consistent moisture. Ensure that the soil doesn’t ever get waterlogged but make sure that it is consistently moist.

Step 5: How to Plant Mint

Mint is very easy to grow; it will thrive given the correct soil, container, and placement. Deciding how to grow your mint comes down to personal preferences. You can grow your first plant from a cutting or from seed.

From Seed:

Seeds take ten to fifteen days to germinate, and cuttings will start producing roots in ten to twelve days if placed in a glass of water in a sunny place. Plant mint seedlings or cuttings fifteen inches apart and thin them regularly. Water well, and after flowering in summer, cut the shoots back to two inches from the base of the plant.
