But now, having hat a look at the enormous choice of possibilities, you will see it’s only a small collection, not the whole choice. You can use it if it suits. Still, the whole range is only offered from the symbol in the Home tab.

5.2 Using formulas

As we have seen, the standard offers do cover a wide range of demands. Still, it can be done even better. For example, they aren’t able to format any other cell than the one that contains the value in question. Now think of a large table that has a critical value in column Z - it would be so great if the whole row changed colour to alarm the user! This can be done, but without any Excel assistance. Moreover, from this point onwards, you need to be familiar with relation types. If not, you’ll find an in-depth explanation in my booklet ‘Roll away the boring stuff!’.

For our example, imagine a property manager dealing with a bunch of rental flats. The flats can have one out of three states: rented, in renovation or to let. We want to apply different colours to the different states not only in one cell but for the whole row. We will use a very simple formula to make it as clear as possible. But indeed, you can apply the most sophisticated functions and formulas, if required. Still, it would be a very good idea first to check them somewhere on the sheet before copying them into the formatting dialogue. Because here, there is no assistance at all. You’ll make it on your own or you don’t.
