2. Say nice things about people.

It turns out my straight-talking grandma was a bit of a guru with her adage of ‘if you haven't got anything nice to say about someone, then keep your gob shut’.

Words create worlds, so when speaking about someone, speak positively.

Here's a Sanj example. I was visiting my friend Sid and, to be honest, I was a bit nervous about meeting a new crowd of people. But Sid didn't just go through the motions of ‘Everyone, this is Sanj. Sanj, this is everyone’, he said this: ‘This is Sanj, my brother from Wales who is visiting. He's a great guy. Let's make sure we show him the best time possible over the next few days.’

It's amazing how such a small change in words had such a big impact on me. And it got me thinking I should up my game so, when the opportunity arose, I paid it forward. Sure, I stumbled a bit by introducing one of my friends as ‘This is Oli, my mate from Uni’, before quickly correcting myself and adding, ‘Actually, Oli is one of my closest friends from Uni, someone I lived with for two years, one of the most talented people I know AND makes me a cake every year for my birthday!’

The crowd grinned. There was an audible ‘Cake! Wow!’ and everyone immediately wanted to chat to Oli, knowing it might lead to their very own Victoria sponge.

I've heard it called an ‘emotional bucket’. We all want to feel good and it's our job to fill other people's buckets. Notice the small things. Comment on someone's lovely cardigan, happy face, smiley eyes, or positive attitude. Sure, there's a fine line to be drawn between being totally genuine or a tad over the top. We're not asking you to be creepy, salacious, smarmy, inappropriate, or politically incorrect – just, well … kind.

Genuinely and wholeheartedly kind.

It's a bucket-filler for them, and you!

Try this exercise. List five people in your life and write in one sentence how you would introduce them in the best way possible.
