Determining how much drug development costs contribute to the total is surprisingly hard. The companies tend not to break down their research expenditures in a very granular way, and that makes it difficult to know how the funds listed as âresearch and developmentâ are spent:
⦠âquite a lotâ of things can be incorporated into R&D expenditures, such as legal expenses for acquiring and defending intellectual property rights, commercial activities, and fees paid to doctors for participation in clinical trials.4
