The shoes that Bowerman handed Knight were strange indeed. They were handmade, with uppers constructed of the kind of rubber-coated fabric often used for wipeable tablecloths. Knight slipped them on at practice one evening, but he didn’t wear them for long. His teammate Otis Davis spotted the shoes and asked to try them out. Davis liked them so much that he wore shoes that Bowerman made while training. (Davis went on to become a gold medalist in the 1960 Olympics.) It seemed like Bowerman was onto something.

After graduating from the University of Oregon and studying business at Stanford University, Knight wasn’t really sure what he wanted to do next. He tried selling encyclopedias and working as an accountant. But nothing clicked, so he took off on a trip to travel the world. While Knight was visiting Japan, he spotted a pair of knockoff Adidas sneakers on display in a store. He asked the clerk which company made them. The next thing Knight knew, he was on a train headed for the Onitsuka (pronounced OH-knee-TSOO-ka) shoe factory.
