Chapter 6

I Had to admit the bodysuit was comfortable. It was made of some synthetic fabric that I was not familiar with. It was like a second skin. I wanted to assume superman’s outfit was made of the same stuff. Jessica sure did fill her bodysuit out well. Thank God I was in shape because the suits left little concealed. They were very much like the spandex-looking painted-on costumes of comic book superheroes.

“John Price, follow me,” said Dez.

“Are you going to take me to the real human behind this mission?” I asked.

“Yes, John Price, you will meet my creator finally,” said Dez.

“Can you just call me John?” I asked. “The – John Price this and that sounds silly.”

“Yes, John,” said Dez. “Come this way.” Dez started walking down the hallway of the underground base.

“Come on Jessica,” I said, as I waved to her. She was busy feeling the fabric of the new bodysuit. Her eyes were wide with curiosity, as she started following me down the hallway.

We came to a large empty room. The walls of the room, like all the others, were heavy reinforced steel of some kind.

“Where is your boss, Dez?” I asked. And just as I finished asking the wall lit up with the image of an older man with graying hair and a receding hairline. He was wearing a white lab coat over gray scrubs.

“Greeting John,” said the man. “I’m so glad to see you again, finally after so long.”

“Who are you? Why are you not here in person? And what do you mean by – again?” I asked, rapidly, feeling slightly annoyed.

“I am Gavin, Doctor Gavin Price,” he said. “I met you over two hundred years ago uncle.”

“Gavin Price? You can’t be Gavin,” I said. “Gavin was only nine years old when I last saw him.”

“I was,” said Gavin. “I am your brother Josh’s son.”

“But how?” I asked.

“You disappeared in the year 2020,” said Gavin. “Our whole family assumed you were dead. After high school, I graduated at the top of my class and got a full scholarship to MIT. I got my doctorates in Quantum Physics and Robotics. But most of my work has evolved much since the invasion. In 2036 when the Malacients first attacked I was working with a skeleton crew on a top-secret project, the alpha-one in this underground base. Our communications with Washington and the military were cut off. A few of our crew left our base, the Alpha-One base named after the project, but never returned. I was the youngest scientist of five stranded here. With drones, we learned of what happened to the world. The alien invasion of the Malacients was an extinction event. But here deep below the surface, we evaded the attention of the Malacients. We had power and food for four hundred years or more.”

“But how did you survive?” I asked. “I mean you would have to be over two hundred years old and you look more like sixty, how?”

“I’ll try to explain,” said Gavin. “The five of us stayed below the surface here.
