The House of Dragons was an old Victorian mansion said to be haunted. It stood where Darly ended and the Cursed Forest began. Dragons loved to show off how fearless they were, but Alecto wasnât fooled.
Their mansion wasnât haunted. And Dragons did not ever step foot in that forest behind their House, despite rumors of their secret rituals.
Those fuckers were all bark and no bite, even if being in the presence of their High Priest Norse Fox sent chills down Alectoâs back. And not in a pleasant way.
Alecto was the last one to show up to the party, it seemed. As she walked through the old gate and passed people outside, already tipsy and enjoying themselves, she glanced around looking for her friends.
Alecto often got whispers and mean looks as she walked through campus. But, somehow, during the parties, most witches managed to forget what their problem with her was.
Not today, it seemed.
As Alecto entered the House and made her way through the living room and dining room, many eyes were on her. And neither of them were kind or friendly. She snorted. Guess people really suspected the Snakes for the Tigersâ House burning down last week.
Finally, a familiar face popped up in the crowd. Sadly, it wasnât the face of someone Alecto wanted to see.
But it was too late because Blaze noticed her. He extended a hand with a glass of vodka, neat.
âHere you are, Black.â Alecto took the glass and downed the drink in one gulp. He whistled. âThatâs the spirit.â
âWhere are the others?â
Blaze casually looked around. âValâs with her new boys, Andro is probably with his new boy, and Jolene is somewhere, probably talking with a plant or somethinâ.â
âDonât be a fucking dick.â
Blaze smirked but didnât say anything else as he refilled her drink.
âI guess itâs only you and me.â
âAnd a couple more dozens of people as well,â she replied, walking away from him.
Alecto wasnât going to spend the night with Blaze fucking Leveau.
Nah-ah.
She didnât need any temptations or any more reckless shit happening. They were bad for each other, and the further away Alecto was from Blaze, the better.
Apparently, Blaze had missed the memo because a hand wrapped around Alectoâs forearm, yanking her back.
âNot so fast,â he said. âWhy donât you have a drink with me?â
Alecto yanked her arm away from him, both standing in the middle of a crowd in the dining room with tall ceilings and an old dark wood dining table covered with alcohol.
âI already have a drink,â Alecto sneered, lifting the glass he gave her.
Blaze bit his bottom lip. âOh, come on. One night. Give me one night, and maybe Iâll surprise you.â
Alecto stilled.
Maybe she was fucking crazy, but there was something inside her that wanted to indulge Blaze. After all, Alecto was always craving an adventure, and Blaze was nothing if not an adventure.
One with massive consequences, but to Hel with it.
âOne night.â
Blazeâs face lit up. Before Alecto could say anything more, he swooped her into his embrace and led her through the dining room into the kitchen and into the back garden.
