Iskander

“Have you heard from them yet?” Keary asked.

I shook my head, knowing that he couldn’t see me. “No,” I answered. “I don’t know that I’m really expecting to. They emphasize emphatically that these contracts aren’t breakable. They’re permanent.”

“Except in extenuating circumstances,” he said.

“I’m not sure this is one of those circumstances. It’s not like I didn’t go into it with my eyes open.”

Keary sighed in exasperation. “Iska, Imani has been manipulating you since the moment you stepped foot into that house!”

“But is that really an extenuating circumstance?” I asked. “She hasn’t threatened my life. She’s not abusive.”

“Depends on what definition you’re using!”

I smirked at his outrage. Keary was the kind of friend everyone needed. Ready to fight the battles for you that you didn’t think were worth fighting. Battles you didn’t see yourself winning.

A breeze brushed against my face, and I closed my eyes, breathing in the warm sea air. I was laying across a bench in the grassy space close to the beach. Staring up at the cloudless sky as if it would provide answers to questions I refused to ask.

“I think you need to call them. See what the status is,” Keary said.

I rolled my eyes. “Think maybe I can get it escalated to a supervisor?” I asked tersely.

“Yes,” he answered, nonplussed.

“Keary, I asked who handled contracts. The AMs do. That means it’s already at the level it needs to be at.”

“You’re just arguing so you don’t get your hopes up.”

“Yes!” I said. “You really think I want to hope that they can actually do something about this and then be let down that I’m genuinely stuck as belonging to them?”

He didn’t respond for a minute. “No. I’m sorry. It’s easy for me to be irate and push for what we all know is right, but I’m not going through it like you are. You know I just want what’s right and best for you, right?”

“I know,” I said. “And it means the world to me. I don’t even want you to stop trying to make me live my best life. I just… I don’t know what to do. With my life in general, never mind about them.”

“Are you still talking with Nora?” he asked.

See? He knew everything! “Yeah. I think she’s being pessimistic about the whole thing so I don’t get my hopes up, just as I said. I don’t know what she actually thinks.”

“Oh! Here’s a thought. Sign a release or whatever so Nora can talk to The Harem Project. She could give a professional, expert opinion.”

I sighed. “I think you actually need to read one of these contracts,” I said.

“I don’t want nightmares for the rest of my life.”

“You’re already allergic to commitment. Why not?”

“Huh!” he snorted. “I’m not allergic. I just have a very strong aversion to it that makes me hyperventilate whenever it comes up. Right now, I feel a little lightheaded.”

I laughed. “You’re absolutely ridiculous. You really want to be alone forever?”

“Ha, I’m not alone! I’m whoring it up! I’m a god, and can live for eternity like this.
