Chapter Six: A Lady’s Place

I’ve thought long and hard about what I saw today at the Faded Rose and I’m both concerned and aroused. Lila behaved in a way with another man that I thought at one time would have been impossible. My wife, the woman with whom I shared vows before a minister in a church, has become one of the whores in Mack’s establishment. It’s shocking, though it’s not exactly apart from what we spoke about a few evenings ago.

The front door of our small home opens and Lila walks in. She appears tired as she approaches me and sits down by the fireplace.

“I have some food ready,” I tell her as I nod toward a small cast iron pot sitting above the flames in the fireplace. “It’s vegetable soup.”

My wife smiles softly and shakes her head. “I had a little something to eat at the bar a couple of hours ago. Mack was really sweet to me and offered some lamb and onions.”

“I see.” Folding my arms across my chest as I relax in the chair, I ask, “Anything of any notice happen today at work?”

Lila looks at the flames in front of her and doesn’t answer at first. However, she soon turns and asks, “Did you see it all?”

“See what?” I reply.

She clears her throat and takes a breath before telling me, “Rebecca told me you were there, Will. I know that you watched me with that man.”

A chill runs up my spine toward my neck. I had decided that I wouldn’t tell her about my presence at the Faded Rose and that I would wait for my Lila to tell me herself that she had done something with another man. It made sense at the time when I made the decision, but it appears Rebecca has decided to share with my wife what was done. I’m angry, but also relieved.

“I saw,” I tell her. “You were with him for a while and I saw most of it.”

Lila’s face turns pink. “I was going to tell you at some point, husband. I promise you that.”

“I’m sure you would have. It’s nothing anyway, right? We agree that there would be things that you would do to earn more money, didn’t we? It’s not as if you did anything behind my back, Lila.”

“But, I feel as if I have. You came and saw me with him and then walked away without saying a word to me. It made me wonder if you were angry at me, William. I wish you had stayed and let me explain things.”

Shaking my head, I reply, “There’s nothing really to explain, right? You did what you had to do to make three dollars. It’s a good sum of money for that work, isn’t it?”

“It is. Still, I worry that this will eat away at you and soon you will come to dislike me. That’s not what I want, my sweet. You are the center of my life and if one of my customers causes that to change, I don’t know what I will do.
