Chapter Six: The Other Man

His name is David and he will arrive shortly. At least, that’s what my wife has told me just this afternoon. Laney met him during one of her job conferences a few weeks ago and she contacted him by email on Monday. Apparently they hit it off during their conversations, because it’s now Friday evening and they are going out to dinner and a movie soon.

“Let him in when he gets here, alright?” I hear her say from the bedroom. “I’m still getting ready and he’s nearly here.” My wife looks out of our bedroom door at me and smiles as she asks, “Are you sure you’re okay with this? I don’t want to freak you out by having him come here, Adrian. If you want me to text him and have him meet me at the restaurant instead...”

“I’m fine,” I say as I force a smile across my face. “Just finish getting ready.” Laney pulls her head back into the room and continues to prepare herself for the arrival of the other man as I sit quietly in my chair. I don’t have to wait long. A knock at the front door of our house causes me to jump a little as I look up from my phone. I get up and make my way to the door.

“Good evening,” the man across the threshold says after I open the door. He offers a smile, but I get the sense that he’s as nervous as I am about this whole thing.

“Hello.” I offer my hand to him and we shake. “David, I presume?” The man has a tight grip on my hand and I begin to wonder if there is a competition between us to see who will flinch first.

He releases my hand and replies, “Yes, sir. I’m David. And you are Adrian?”

“I am.” I smile and nod as I wave him into the living room. After closing the door behind him, I ask, “Can I get you anything to drink? We have water, beer, wine, and probably some diet soft drinks in the fridge.” This all feels so strange as I guide him toward a seat in the living room. Here I am, hosting a man who will likely rest his hard pecker inside my wife later tonight.

“No, but thank you. I’m fine.” David takes a seat as I look at him. He’s tall with sandy blond hair and blue eyes. I can see that he is an athletically fit man beneath the simple dress shirt and blazer that he’s wearing. Laney has told me a little about him, including that he is a management specialist at a company in town, but she has been careful to keep me in the dark as to what his last name happens to be. I suppose she would prefer that I don’t stalk him on social media.

“So, how are things with you?” I ask as I sit down in another chair nearby. It’s rather odd to start a conversation like this when I really don’t know the guy at all.
