ZOË GLANCED at her toes, back up at him, back at her toes, and then it dawned. “Oh…feet. Her.” She tugged away from his grasp, forcing him to let go. “Good grief, Jake, of course not! Why would I be her?”

“But how do you know the things you know?”

“So you think Toni might know those things, and therefore since I knew, I might be Toni.” She considered that for a moment. It made a certain amount of sense, but it was also complicated and made her head hurt. That and the fact that she kept smelling the coconut and pineapple aroma, which made her obsess about covering Jake with ice cream and chocolate sauce. It was no wonder she was having a hard time.

“So?” he prompted.

“What? I already told you I’m not Toni,” she declared. “Do you want ID?”

“I already know you don’t have ID, because the EJ guards stole it all,” he returned indignantly. “Besides, if you were Toni the con woman, you could have more IDs in more names than the driver’s license bureau.”

Con woman? Sheesh. He had even a shred of suspicion that she was a con woman?

She raised her right hand. “My name is Zoë Elizabeth Kidd. My name has always been Zoë Elizabeth Kidd, and I have never gone by any other name. I do not believe I have even known a woman named Toni, and especially not one with sparkly plastic shoes. I am an incredibly trustworthy person. Everyone who knows me says that about me. Would you like references? Or do you believe me?”

“Maybe.” He frowned. “I still want to know how you know the things you do.”

She shrugged. No way, in his current mood, was she going to try to explain this sudden—and really inexplicable—surge of psychic powers. He was such a skeptic. Besides, except for the tarot cards and a tiny bit of intuition here and there, she’d never experienced this before herself. Raising her chin, she told him, “I’m a good judge of character.”

His gaze was steady and uncompromising. “I thought maybe you’d tell me you were psychic or something.”

“You don’t believe in psychics.”

“No, I don’t.”

“So I guess I can’t be one then, can I?” she inquired coolly.

“No one is psychic, Zoë. I just thought that might be your excuse, your way of getting around the truth.”

Well, that was insulting. Fuming at his attitude, she jumped up from her chair and retrieved her shoes and socks.

Had she thought Jake’s appearance in her life was a cosmic kick in the pants? How about a cosmic joke? She couldn’t believe that any higher power would ever have intended that he could be her true love. He was snotty and mean and suspicious and so pushy. How aggravating that she just wanted to enjoy her fruit-and-cheese basket and try out the fun soaps and lotions, maybe order a little room service, and he was such a downer. What in the world had he been thinking, grabbing and exposing her feet like that? She thought she had perfectly nice feet.
