Kristy

Lance’s hand brushing up against mine was just too much. It brought a torrent of feeling back to me. Feelings about men and cheating and fidelity and how I always get the worst of all of it.

So why’d I just ask him to take a walk with me?

Oh, fuck all – I don’t know! He makes me feel safe, how ‘bout that? I feel good around him, like he’s…I dunno, like he’s somehow damaged goods as well. And maybe he is. After all, just like me…he’s up at this lake all by his lonesome, too.

Why?

We get down to the trail that runs along the lake’s edge. It’s a gorgeous route, small shrubs and boulders dotting the path, butterflies flitting about the wild lilies, daisies, and asters. After a few hundred yards the trail moves away from the lake’s edge, goes up an incline as it follows the rise of the mountains. We get into the trees, robins and grouses flying about, a woodpecker drilling into a trunk somewhere nearby.

We get to talking, mostly about the jobs we do back in the city. Sometimes the talk skirts around our exes, but we quickly steer it away or just let the talk die off…walking in silence for a time. Once our fingers brush against each other on a narrow part of the trail. A woosh of excitement goes through me before I tamp it down. I glance up at Lance’s eyes. It seems he was feeling the same emotion…excitement.

Does he like me?

We continue on through the trees, the trail eventually turning as we reach the end of the lake so it can work back on itself in a circle. We’re talking about our time in college by that point. Both of us went to school in Fairview, though Lance for his undergraduate, me for my graduate work.

“It was a real pain when I transferred,” I say.

“Oh?”

“Yeah, credits were all screwy. For a time it looked like I might lose a whole year’s worth of progress.

“No!”

I chuckle. “Well, we managed to work it out.”

“What happened?

“Well, I dunno…I went into the registrar’s office one day and brought up the fact that I hadn’t–”

Ahead of me, something slithers across the trail.

My eyes go wide.

I flinch…

…and scream…

“Snake!”

And jump…

…right into Lance’s arms.

“Whoa!” he says, gripping me tightly and holding me close. “It’s alright, it’s alright…it’s gone – look!”

My head is buried in his chest. My eyes are beginning to water, not from sadness but from fear. I shake my head, grip those big arms of his tighter.

“Kristy, it’s alright,” he says with a chuckle, “it’s gone.” His hand comes up and brushes back my hair. I look up at him then, look into those calm, kind eyes.

Something comes over me.

The fear…the betrayal…the loss – all of it.

I look into Lance’s eyes and I find myself needing something, needing… him .

He looks down at me. The smile slowly fades from his face. His eyes dart back and forth, looking at mine.

He lowers his head a bit.

I raise mine up.
